Congenital defects of posterior arch of the atlas : a case report
نویسندگان
چکیده
Congenital anomalies of the posterior arch of the atlas (first cervical vertebrae) are very uncommon but well documented. This condition is usually asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally. Nevertheless some patients present with some degree of transient or chronic neurological symptoms following minor neck or head trauma [1,2]. We present a case with congenital defect of posterior arch of atlas and review previous reports in literature.

Congenital Anomaly of the Atlas Misdiagnosed as Posterior Arch Fracture of the Atlas and Atlantoaxial Subluxation
Partial or complete absence of the posterior arch of the atlas is a well-documented anomaly but a relatively rare condition. This condition is usually asymptomatic so most are diagnosed incidentally. There have been a few documented cases of congenital defects of the posterior arch of the atlas combined with atlantoaxial subluxation. We report a very rare case of congenital anomaly of the atlas...

PURPOSE To describe our experience with congenital anomalies of the posterior arch of the atlas, with a review and classification of these defects and a note on their clinical significance. METHODS We report six children and one adult, the mother of one of the children, with an anomalous posterior arch of the atlas. The diagnosis was made on lateral films of the neck. Three patients also had ...
متن کاملCongenital absence of the posterior arch of the atlas associated with a fracture of the anterior arch.
Structural defects of the posterior arch of the atlas are rare, and range from clefts of variable location and size to more extensive defects such as complete agenesis. These abnormalities are usually incidental radiological findings. We present a case of a fracture of the anterior arch of the atlas associated with a congenital abnormality of the posterior arch.
متن کاملCase of Atlantoaxial Dislocation with Assimilated C1, Absent Posterior C2, Butterfly C3, and Fused Subaxial Cervical Spine: Management Dilemma with Multiple Segmentation and Formation Defects
Segmentation defects are often seen with congenital atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD) though an associated absence of posterior arch of C2 and butterfly C3 is rare. Apart from rarity, the combination of formation and segmentation defects adds to the management dilemma. We report a case of AAD with assimilated atlas, absent C2 posterior arch, C3 butterfly vertebra with floating posterior elements, ...
